Corning Grand Army of the Republic

Recently a picture of the members of the Corning Post #259 of the Grand Army of the Republic was found.

While researching members of this post, it was discovered that Edward S. Vernon sent articles to The National Tribune, a Washington, D.C. newspaper. Below are some of those articles about the Corning post.

The National Tribune, 11 Mar 1897, page 6

Kansas Ladies of the G.A.R.
The National Tribune is in receipt of a very interesting report from Frances E. Stiers, Department Corresponding Secretary, Ladies of the G.A.R., Corning, Kan., which would be published in full would space permit. This report is very encouraging, and shows activity throughout the entire Department. There have been many social affairs, which have been attended by prominent members of the Order, and it is believed that the result will be shown in the next annual report of membership. Several Circles have reported a number of initiations. Humboldt Circle, 97, has 61 members, 17 of whom are veterans, and more are reported ready to affiliate. “Pap” Thomas Circle, 18, of Great Bend, has 38 lady members, 15 of whom were mustered last year. Besides, there are 42 comrades who have been initiated.
